Joseph S. Friedman is an assistant professor of Electrical Engineering at the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering & Computer Science at The University of Texas at Dallas and is an affiliated member of the Computer Engineering program. He holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Electrical & Computer Engineering from Northwestern University and undergraduate degrees from Dartmouth College. He was previously a CNRS Research Associate with Université Paris-Saclay, a guest scientist at RWTH Aachen University, and worked on logic design automation at Intel Corporation. He has been awarded a Fulbright Postdoctoral Fellowship and is a member of the editorial board of the Microelectronics Journal.

Dr. Friedman directs the interdisciplinary NanoSpinCompute research laboratory at UT Dallas. His research objective is to invent, design, and analyze novel computing paradigms that exploit nanoscale phenomena to achieve greater capabilities than conventional CMOS architectures. He is particularly interested in spintronics and low-dimensional carbon (carbon nanotubes and graphene). The central theme of the NanoSpinCompute research laboratory is to ensure that individual switching elements can be cascaded to enable complex computing systems.
