Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, University of Tehran, 2012
OVERVIEW
Since 2025, Mona Ghassemi has served as a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas). She joined UT Dallas in 2022 as an Associate Professor and Chairholder of the Texas Instruments Early Career Award. From 2017 to 2022, she was an Assistant Professor in the Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech, where she was named both Steven O. Lane Junior Faculty Fellow and College of Engineering Faculty Fellow in 2021.
In 2020, Prof. Ghassemi achieved a rare distinction by receiving both the NSF CAREER Award and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) Young Investigator Program Award in the same year—becoming only the second faculty member in her department’s history to do so, and the fourth to earn two major early-career awards. In 2021, she further distinguished herself by earning the Department of Energy (DOE) Early Career Research Program Award, becoming the only Virginia Tech faculty member to receive early-career awards from all three major U.S. federal agencies (NSF, DOD, and DOE). Nationwide, only a handful of professors have achieved this exceptional milestone.
Her leadership roles include serving as Vice President (Administrative, elected for 2026) and Vice President (Technical, 2024–2025) of the IEEE Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society (DEIS); Chair of the UT Dallas ECE Faculty Search Committee (2024–2025); and Thrust Leader for Energy Science and Technology in the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science. She has also served as an At-Large Member of the DEIS Administrative Committee (2020–2023; re-elected 2023–2025); DEIS Representative to the IEEE-USA Committees on Transportation and Aerospace Policy (CTAP) and R&D Policy; and a member of several DEIS and Power and Energy Society (PES) committees, including the Education Committee and Nominations and Appointments Committee.
Prof. Ghassemi has been a Senior Member of IEEE since 2016 and a licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) since 2015. She serves as an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation, IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, IET High Voltage, and Power Electronic Devices and Components (Elsevier), and as a Guest Editor for Energies and Aerospace, as well as Associate Guest Editor for the IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Power Electronics. In 2020, she received the Contribution Award from the IET High Voltage journal.
Her scholarly record includes over 250 peer-reviewed publications, four book chapters, and four Best Paper Awards. She has been consistently recognized among the World’s Top 2% of Scientists.
